TV Forecast Observations

Q4 Local

Week-to-Week Pacing Changes

It’s hard to believe we’re in Q4 now, but here we are, and thankfully we’ve seen massive pace improvements over the last few days. The quarter saw 3.4 points of growth week to week, with October adding 4.6 points against last year, November and December each adding about 2.5.

  • Only our MyNet category saw a small decline; every other category picked up nicely for the quarter.
Forecast Updates

We’re very happy with where our Q4 pace sits relative to other years. In fact, Q3 patterns tell us that each month and the quarter might still be at least 2 points stronger than our current forecasts, but we’d like to get a little further into the quarter before we move up. Some of our stations only update their pacing on a weekly basis, so we might be missing the full picture of pre-quarter booking today. So for now, our forecasts stay at:

  • +7% for October
  • -3% for November
  • -5% for December
  • +0.5% for the quarter

Q4 National

Week-to-Week Pacing Changes

National’s been moving in the right direction for weeks now, but it really exploded this last week with the addition of accounts like ITN.

Furthermore, we suspect that the recent shakeup at Cox Reps may have resulted in a lack of clarity regarding pending business for most of our customers. We’ve had calls with many different stations this week in which we’ve seen a lot more money come down than was previously expected. Which is a wonderful problem to have, but it means that many have gotten tight in the last few days.

  • The quarter’s pace added 11.7 points, with each month adding 11-12 points.
  • We’re told General Motors isn’t completely booked yet and is still late against last year, and of course political should force October ’18 pace downward, so we certainly see more growth to come.
  • Every single category grew substantially this week.
Forecast Updates

As we said in Local, we’re hesitant to make big changes so early in the quarter’s start, especially without all of the current data, but the argument for stronger forecasts is a bit more compelling on the National end, so we feel comfortable moving up.

However, we’re going to make smaller changes than the percent of final data would suggest we could go, because other comparisons to the rest of 2019 tell us not to get too optimistic this early. We’ll just move things up a tad, half a point for November and December, to the following:

  • +4% for October
  • -8.5% for November
  • -12.5% for December
  • Quarter up 0.3 points to -4.7%

Q4 Local + National

We’re just 2 days into Q4, so it’s hard to get a full grasp on its potential, but it’s looking on track to our previous forecasts or better. In a couple of weeks our stations should have over 80% of the quarter booked, so things will be much clearer then. Until then, our forecast sits at -1.2% for total core.

Enabling or Disabling ShareBuilder Access

It is important to keep your consultant up to date with any changes that need to be made to login credentials for your current or former employees. If a new hire needs credentials, reach out to your consultant with the employee’s first and last name, as well as an email address.  The employee’s title and phone number are helpful as well, but not required. In the event that an employee with login credentials leaves your station, inform your consultant as soon as possible so they may remove the credentials associated with that employee. If an employee forgets their password or has trouble logging in, your consultant can create a password reset to get them back up and running in the system. It’s a good idea to check your list of employees with access to ShareBuilder a few times a year, so please talk to your consultant about any concerns or changes that need to be made.
